Weekend Newsfeed: A cooler, wetter change is moving up NZ

Overnight rain moves into Southland and spreads north along the West Coast, rain eases to showers on Sunday morning for Southland and southern parts of Otago.

Another hot day (although not as hot as Saturday) in eastern Canterbury northwards and for all of the North Island, but thankfully areas of high cloud lessens the intensity of the sun (for those finding it too much) – and it will be cooler for Southland and Otago and along West Coast with areas of precipitation.

Rain moves in for the North Island on Monday morning coming in from the Tasman Sea and temperatures will ease. Hawkes Bay and Gisborne remain dry till afternoon and evening respectively. Patchy rain or showers move up the east coast of the South Island bringing welcome relief and cooler temperatures.

Some interior parts like Central Otago and the Mackenzie Country may stay dry with sun, West Coast has a mainly sunny day and Nelson is warm but areas of cloud may be more likely the further north you go up the South Island.

Is the sunny weather going to come back, or is that it? No more summer?

WW Forecast Team on 13/01/2024 9:05pm

The second half of January looks a bit more unsettled than the first half due to low pressure increasing. Summer weather typically lingers in NZ into March, but basically being two islands partially in the Roaring Forties nothing is ever locked in here.
