As of 2024 we will no longer be publishing questions related to weather forecasts if they are answered via our hyper-local hourly & 10 day forecasts, weather maps and regular daily and monthly weather & climate videos.
We’re a small NZ business with limited resources to respond to general weather questions. Our social media pages may be helpful to you, especially if you want to often talk (or groan!) about your local weather. You can find more resources from us here if that’s your thing.

Hi team,
How long should we keep an eye on the forecast before we can be almost 100% certain how it’ll play out? I have a event on Saturday night in Christchurch and this rate it’ll be cancelled due to the rain which I’m really hoping is not the case. I’m guessing Thurs/Fri would be more of a solidifed forecast?

Hi Josh, our forecasts update hourly – which on the day itself can be more helpful. International models (which all forecasts around the world are based on) update a couple times a day usually. So those hourly updates this far out may not be as usuful – but if you’re really wanting to track the confidence of the forecasts check it when you wake up and again in the evening to get a gist of things. So yes, Thu/Fri you’ll get a better idea – then couple that up with our week-day weather videos (which return Wednesday) and that will help you make more sense of what is driving your local weather forecast for Saturday and how certain it may be looking.
At this stage we’re only forecasting a moderate chance of few mm of rain in Christchurch on Saturday PM.
Cheers
WW Team

Huh? 60 degrees in Snells Beach today?? Is one of the machines broken?
Cheers,
Hailey 🙂

Hope you’ve got air con! 🙂 Thanks for the update Hailey – some private weather stations do sometimes break (we display many thousands across NZ). In our app you can select other observations near to you that are working. However if that one still remains broken in a week or two please let us know. Most are fixed fairly soon but we can permanently remove ones that have broken for weeks.
Please note the current incorrect displayed temperature is completely unrelated to our weather forecasts for Snells Beach.
Kind regards
– WW team

Hi Guys! This site is great, I like the cloud cover percentages by the hour particularly. I use your site as my go to now, as I find the government one to be pretty inaccurate for Wellington city. One thing I might suggest is as this is Wellington wind is an everyday occurrence here and most sites only show the wind symbol not the underlying conditions (eg today is very windy but there is a reasonable amount of sun, so the icon would be sun/ cloud overlayed with the wind symbol) I reckon this could be a good point of difference for weatherwatch.co.nz 🙂

Hey Phil, I’ve noticed that in Hawkes Bay when rain appears in the forecast it can show up as a significant amount 10-20mm or more when it’s a week or more out, but as the forecasted rainy days draw closer the forecast amount reduces and often it comes to only a few light showers. I mention because it’s a pattern I’ve seen a few times. Anything in the model that could be tweaked around this?
Cheers
David

Hi David – this happens when the precise placement of a large and usually complex low pressure zone isn’t yet locked in. Watch our daily weather videos along with your local forecast and you will soon understand why this is happening 🙂
Cheers
