Please help. I see this all the time “rainfall may approach warning criteria 15km east of the main divide”. I have googled, I have asked, I have searched what is considered the ‘main divide’. I understand it is the mountain range up the South Island, but how do I use this for predicting weather with something so specific as 15km east of a landmark that goes all the way up the island? Thank you a million times over for explaining this to me.

Hi Hannah – thanks for the question but you’d need to ask MetService about that for more specifics. To us it means the highest main ridge of the Southern Alps which runs north-east to south-west and leans more towards the West Coast. At WeatherWatch we simply refer to this as “Spillover from the west” and this can vary along the Southern Alps as to how far east it goes. As the air rises over the Southern Alps that process strips most of the moisture, so once the air drops down on the eastern side it warms up and loses the rest of that moisture.

Hi Josh, hard to know sorry – spring is very changeable but the mix of warm and cool air is a good recipe for thunderstorms, especially when there is a westerly for northern NZ but a southerly over the Tasman Sea.

and this century weather records have been broken with some in the past year or so. aucklands wettest day was last year on the deadly january 27 flood event. followed by deadly cyclone gabrielle. quite a few damaging tornado events 4 deadly ones and big thunderstorm events and droughts.
