A big nationwide cold blast is developing with snow expected in the hills and ranges of both islands, heavy rain on the West Coast and showers, some with hail, spreading to most other regions for a time.
The cold peaks today and tonight in the South Island and across Tuesday and Wednesday morning for many other regions.
However towards the end of the week high pressure builds bringing a settled Friday and milder Saturday for many areas.
