Latest Christmas forecast + New Year’s Eve outlook

We have an extended forecast covering the rest of 2025 as a cold change looks set to kick in from Christmas Day in the south, bringing some wind and wet weather (and dusting of alpine snow).

It’s an unsettled forecast for the rest of the year – but not all will have bad weather, with large dry areas in the mix and also some heat still coming too (especially in the north and east of both islands).

But southern and south-western parts of the South Island (and at times the lower North Island) have the most changeable weather coming in.

We break it down for you and give you the forecast right through until New Year’s Eve next week!

SOUTH PACIFIC TROPICAL ISLANDS:
We also have the latest weather map for the South Pacific islands on Christmas Day in our NZ forecast today.

  • Back again tomorrow (Tuesday) with our next NZ weather update!
