Here’s what is making the weather headlines today.

WARM OVERNIGHT TEMPERATURES IN THE EAST

The strong northerly airflow over the South Island meant temperatures in the east would have been very warm last night, Christchurch for example was sitting at 18 degrees around midnight. Quite warm for a winters night!

VERY HEAVY RAIN EASES FOR THE WEST COAST

Rain for the West Coast, very heavy in some areas with a chance of thunderstorms eases from this afternoon, just showers remain by evening.

SNOW FOR SOUTHLAND AND OTAGO TO 600M

Rain this morning for the lower South Island eases to showers this afternoon, thinning out quite a bit this evening and becoming dry for most. Snow to 700m lowers to 600m this afternoon, clearing this evening.

Canterbury has some snow to 700m in the south of the region, above 800 to 900m in the north, clearing evening.
