Here’s what is making the weather headlines today.
SNOW SOUTH ISLAND TODAY
There is some very cold air hovering over the South Island today, and yes that means snow is forecast to fall. Sea level snow isn’t overly likely but at the same time is possible south of about Banks Peninsula.
In general snow falls to about 300 to 100m today but yes it may fall to near sea level south of about Banks Peninsula. The higher snow levels (300m) will be further north into Kaikoura / Marlborough, the lower levels naturally further south.
The ranges of Wellington and southern Wairarapa get some snow too, falling to about 500 or 600m.

TEMPERATURES TODAY
Very cold temperatures today for the South Island, highs not escaping single figures for most but Nelson and parts of Buller may just. The coldest temperatures will naturally be inland about the Main Divide.
The upper and eastern North Island by contrast is warmer, north of the Waikato and Napier / Gisborne gets into the mid teens, Auckland and Northland may even hit 17 or 18 degrees.
STRONG WINDS THROUGH CENTRAL NZ
Southeasterlies through Cook Strait are very strong today with gales likely. So Golden Bay, the Marlborough Sounds and Wellington will have to batten down the hatches.
