The volcano that has brought stress to air travellers across the globe has also brought stress to news readers who have struggled to pronounce it.
In a Simpson’s episode several years ago TV anchorman Kent Brockman was pre-reading the news when he came across a word he couldn’t say.
BROCKMAN: (reading his notes to himself) “Tragic news tonight… 120 dead in a tidal wave in Kuala Lala … (struggling) …pure….. Kuala Lum — per… (crosses it out)…. France!”
And in real life many news presenters haven’t even bothered to use the name Eyjafjallajokull, instead referring to it as “Iceland’s volcano”.
America’s ABC News decided it was time to get some help from a translator…
