A large high continues to park itself over the country today so not much going on, there is a front that brushes the far south though and then passes out to the east of the South Island as it moves north.
The North Island is mainly sunny today but there may be areas of cloud this morning in the west then breaking away, warm this afternoon reaching the mid to late twenties for most, perhaps even hitting 30 for some eastern spots. Winds are mostly light tending onshore after midday, southerlies in the east this evening may bring some cloud in south of Napier.
The South Island has a few mid level clouds in the west, cloud a little thicker for Southland, most others have a mainly fine day but expect some high cloud. In the east this afternoon winds tend southeast and a few mid level clouds increase (cloud may thicken up for coastal Otago), winds tend northeast this evening. Temperatures in the mid to late twenties for many (warmest inland), highs in the late teens or perhaps hitting 20 for Southland and Fiordland.
It’s looking quite dry for the east of the South Island currently, the next front with a smidgen of a chance for rain appears around the middle of January.
