Cold overnight temperatures return tonight, especially for the South Island. Frosts are likely in the darker blue shaded areas below with cold temperatures down to 1 or 2 degrees likely reaching some coastal areas. The coldest overnight lows will likely be about the Mackenzie Country getting down to -3 or -4 degrees. The warmest overnight lows are likely about Auckland through to Northland on 10 degrees.
The airflow starts to tilt a little more to the west on Wednesday over the South Island and this leads to a slight bump in daily highs, Bay Of Plenty through to Northland get the warmest highs around 14 to 15 degrees. My pick of the bunch would be Canterbury, especially nearer the coast, while perhaps not as warm as further north skies should be sunny and winds light.
