UPDATED: This is what happens when a passenger jet meets a hailstorm – nature at its most brutal!
This American Airlines Boeing 787 Dreamliner returned (safely) to Beijing after flying into a hail storm at around 26 thousand feet on July 27.
Hail took out the strobe light lenses on both sides and left impact marks on elevator and rudder leading edge.
Wow!
In June, A Delta Airlines Airbus A320-200, DL-1889 from Boston to Salt Lake City with 125 passengers and 5 crew, was enroute east of Denver, when the aircraft encountered severe turbulence, hail and lightning – causing both windshields to crack and the weather radar to fail.
The aircraft received damage to the radome, both windshields and engines.
