It’s a cooler Friday for many regions, especially in the south, but high pressure is moving in for the weekend.
Spring may be ending on the meteorological calendar on Saturday but the spring weather pattern looks to carry on into summer – something WeatherWatch.co.nz exclusively forecast back in August while others were very much focussed on La Niña (which still hasn’t formed).
*Programming Notes:
Let’s get into the forecast for Friday to start with…
RAIN:
Showers are possible first thing around Canterbury and perhaps around the top of the South Island, mostly in the west. Apart from the chance of an isolated shower, the North Island looks dry or mainly dry along with many other regions.
WIND:
Southerly quarter winds for many today, although still a bit of a cloudy westerly for the top of New Zealand.
TEMPERATURES:
Many places have a reset today back to normal temperatures. Easy calculation today – warmest in the north and coolest in the south.
WEEKEND AHEAD AND NEXT WEEK:
That high moves closer to Southland on Saturday bringing light winds and dry skies for most, but a few isolated showers into the upper half of the North Island are expected.
On Sunday that high pressure zone moves over NZ with a centre forming east of Gisborne and another one moving into Southland briefly. NZ is mainly dry but showers again affect the top half and central parts of the North Island – possibly heavy in the afternoon.
Monday kicks off with high pressure now all centred east of Gisborne, bringing dry weather to most of the country but still a few isolated inland showers in the upper North Island and maybe also the ranges of the lower South Island.
Tuesday has windier spring-like nor’westers returning over the South Island and very lower North Island. Gales around the Southern Alps and rain returns to Fiordland with some showers in Southland.
By Wednesday windy westerlies cover most of NZ with lightest winds in Northland and Auckland. Rain or showers for the West Coast and Southland and dry or mainly dry elsewhere. Hottest in the east.
On Thursday west to sou-west winds cover the nation with a few western and southern showers and that eases by next Friday with high pressure parked over the northern Tasman Sea.
