The weather for New Years Eve and New Years Day is going to be unsettled for two thirds of New Zealand as yet another weather pattern with ‘spring like’ characteristics develops.

The northern third of the country will be the most settled with sou’westers dying out and sea breezes for many centres on New Years Day. Temperatures are likely to be in the low to mid 20s for many places.
The central part of New Zealand, roughly the lower North Island and upper South Island will see southerlies dying out on New Years Eve but gusty northerlies developing on New Years Day. However it is expected to be dry for this section with temperatures in the late teens or early 20s. Blenheim and Christchurch, however, may see temperatures in the upper 20s on New Years Day.
For the lower third conditions will be very windy, especially about Dunedin, Southland and Queenstown. While there’s a 30% risk of a shower or two conditions at this stage are expected to be mostly dry on New Years Eve and warm thanks to those winds. New Years Day will a change to hotter northerlies and still dry.
