A cold front slowly moves northwards over the North Island today while a ridge builds over the South Island.

North Island

Partly cloudy for Northland and Auckland, risk of a shower with west to northwesterly winds. Morning rain for the lower western North Island (Taranaki through to Wellington) clears in the afternoon then sun breaks through. Rain for the east coast, perhaps even a heavy fall then easing afternoon and clearing by evening.

South Island

A sunny start for the West Coast of the South Island then cloud thickens, a risk of drizzle from late afternoon. Morning cloud breaks to sunny areas about Nelson. A cloudy day for Marlborough, showers or drizzle clears by midday. Mostly cloudy for Canterbury also, morning drizzle clears, light winds. Sunny spells for Otago, skies a bit cloudier about Southland but mainly dry.
