Lightning strikes man doing dishes

> From the WeatherWatch archives

A man has been struck by lightning in Sydney while doing the dishes.

Yahoo!7 News reports that the 37-year-old was hit by lightning while doing the dishes near a window at a YMCA camp last night at Yarramundi, situated in Sydney’s far west.

The man, who suffered injuries to his neck and shoulder, was treated by paramedics and was expected to be taken to hospital.

Emergency services also attended an incident at Springwood, in the Blue Mountains, after lightning struck curtains hanging in a house’s open window.

Two people in the house were taken to hospital, where one was treated for smoke inhalation.

A NSW State Emergency Service spokesman said there had been 33 requests for assistance across the state, including 12 in the Blue Mountains.

“(The storm) looked pretty spectacular on the radar … but as luck had it, it pretty well passed over mostly unpopulated areas,” the spokesman told AAP.

“There hasn’t been a lot of hail or anything in them, but there’s been some pretty heavy rain.”
