A low moves over the North Island today as an easterly quarter airflow lies over the South Island. This low continues to lie over the North Island on Wednesday bringing unsettled weather to most parts of the country, Southland and Fiordland see the best weather.

Rain or showers for the North Island and upper South Island today, heavy in some areas. Southeasterly winds are strong about central New Zealand, especially though Cook Strait where gales are likely. The best looking weather is about Southland and South Westland.

Wednesday still sees fairly unsettled weather for a majority of the country, some heavy rain possible for northeastern parts of the South Island in the morning then easing. Southerly winds will likely be strong through Cook Strait.
