It hasn’t been the frostiest autumn so far but some colder nights are coming up as high pressure continues to stream over the South Island.
The clearer skies and lighter winds coming up, coupled with longer nights than days, will contribute to light frosts across a large portion of the inland South Island this Saturday. Some places may have frosty conditions on Friday morning also, but it may be a degree or two too mild for most areas.
RuralWeather.co.nz now has a beta Frost Forecaster. Because it’s still in trial mode we’d love your feedback on when it is wrong. If it misses a frost, let us know so we can fine tune the data and make this an even more helpful tool for you locally.
This Autumn has many days leaning warmer than average along with warmer soil temperatures too. Both of these factors along with a distinct lack of significant southerlies have been contributing to fewer frosts for many areas so far. No significant cold snaps are forecast for NZ at this stage in the near future but light frosts will step up in the weeks ahead as the days continue to shorten while the nights get longer and colder.
