Temperatures are down a bit for some regions earlier this week, but a large high pressure zone means winds are lighter for a few days. A low forming in the Tasman Sea brings wind and rain later in the week, followed by another high pressure zone. We’ll have more details in our weather video out around lunchtime Monday.
Let’s get into the forecast for Monday to start with…
RAIN:
A large portion of the country is dry today but showers move across the top half of the North Island, and some isolated showers may be heavy. Early showers clear Southland. There are also afternoon showers developing in the ranges around the lower North Island, Marlborough and Canterbury. Worth pointing out Tuesday may also be similar with afternoon downpours and maybe some isolated inland thunderstorms.
WIND:
High pressure is building over the country with winds easing across today and tomorrow.
TEMPERATURES:
Some parts of the country, especially in the north, may still be warm today but cooler air is moving into parts of NZ – but for some in the south of NZ may notice daytime temperatures lifting. Check your 10 day, hourly, temperatures at WeatherWatch to better work out your temperature trends over the week ahead – as we’re still in for more spring ups and downs.
WEEK AHEAD
Over Tuesday and Wednesday high pressure moves right over the country bringing calmer weather and mostly dry skies – although showers, some heavy, are likely here and there with possibly some afternoon thunderstorms forming inland. Winds are becoming warmer from the north as the high drifts eastwards from NZ later on Wednesday and Thursday.
Low pressure deepens over the Tasman Sea this week and that brings a rain band and showers overnight Wednesday and going into Thursday from the west. Warm north to north-west winds kick in later Wednesday and into Thursday with gales possible for a time around central NZ. Rain may be heavy on the West Coast.
Friday is still a little unclear but low pressure is crossing the country and high pressure is expected to expand again over NZ as we go into the weekend. Spring is all about winter weather slowly fading away and those hints of summer gradually increasing.

Hi Zelda, yes noticeably different today that is for sure.
Some great storms south of us over the Southern Ocean this past winter and now across spring.
Cheers
