Heat kicks in for Christmas celebrations

The mercury has soared across New Zealand this Christmas afternoon with many regions in the mid to late 20s and some regions nudging 30 degrees.

WeatherWatch.co.nz says temperatures in Northland are in the mid 20s, along with Auckland on 25 this hour, 29 in eastern Waikato, and the mid 20s across Bay of Plenty and Rotorua.

In the South Island and Blenheim is on 29 this hour and Christchurch on 24.

Timaru is on 27 and the nations hottest spot is Dunedin on 29

Meanwhile Stewart Island has gusts to 140km/h.

We were reading 27 in the shade at 4pm in Glenfield on Auckland’s North Shore. It was jolly hot sitting around a table with a gigantic roast turkey!

Well here in Northcote it topped at 29.5c but my friend in Herne Bay said his temp said 30c
