The mayor of a quake-hit town in central Italy says people are buried under debris and that the town “isn’t here anymore”, reports Fox News.

Meanwhile CNN says the  6.2-magnitude earthquake has hit southeast of Norcia, Italy, according to the United States Geological Survey.

The earthquake struck about 10 kilometers (6.2 miles) from the town of Norcia at 3:36 a.m. local time. The tremor also was felt in Rome.

About an hour after the earthquake, a 5.5-magnitude aftershock hit just 4 kilometers northeast of Norcia.
