Typhoon Morakot is currently nearly stalled over the island nation of Taiwan. It is packing top winds of about 90 mph but it’s not the winds that will make Morakot a news headline.
Current conditions: Taipei, Taiwan
Due to its sluggish movement, the rainfall from the typhoon will be prolific and is already causing flooding over the island.
According to bbc.com, nearly 500mm of rain has already fallen in some mountainous areas. Some minor landslides have been reported in the north of the island and power has been cut to about 25,000 households.

All domestic flights and many international flights have been cancelled, service on the island’s high-speed railroad has been suspended and seaports have been closed due to the high winds. Gusts have reached up to 180km/h.
Morakot has already been blamed for several deaths in the Philippines.
Unfortunately, there will be even more deaths due to the tremendous flooding that is surely taking place at this time over Taiwan.
