Auck tops daily highs

> From the WeatherWatch archives

Auckland has topped the national temperature stakes this week on 2 occasions which isn’t a feat achieved very often it seems.

Temperatures have been in the low 20s for the city of sails with a couple of very pleasant autumn days but you can count your fingers on one hand for how often New Zealand’s largest city hits the top of the pops each year.In fact, on average Dunedin airport takes away the title more often than their northern neighbour but of the main centres, Christchurch is the city that has the grabs the hottest temperature honours in Aoteoroa annually and reaches double figures.

Looking further into it and during the winter months, Kaitaia frequently snatches the daily high maximum and in summer Alexandra takes it on a number of occasions, especially during anticyclonic conditions. However in winter it can be the reverse with the Central Otago town taking out the coolest daytime high, as frost and fog can remain throughout the daytime.
