Snowy and wintry spells are stretching over much of New Zealand this afternoon as pulses of freezing air keep whacking our islands.
From Auckland to parts of Otago, snow has been reported and some heavy bands of snow with hail and lightning have taken place over parts of Canterbury.
“I think for Cantabs and for some in Otago there’s a risk of heavier snow tomorrow and perhaps in the afternoon” says Weather Analyst Richard Green”.
“This system keeps reenergising itself and flicks out bursts of snow in the strong southerly flow. When a dry spell takes place for a while some people think it’s all over but then a cloudbank rolls in and away it goes again”Richard Green says.
Hamilton and Auckland both saw snowflakes today in a rare occurrence and Tauranga is the only one main centre that has yet to confirm the wintry visitor.
WeatherWatch believes Aucklanders may have a chance of seeing a few more flakes tonight as night approaches and temperatures drop further.
Today snow has been falling in provincial centres such as New Plymouth, Wanganui, Timaru, Ashburton and the list goes on and on…

We live in Te Anau, Fiordland and we.ve had heaps of snow, much more than last month. Spent the day making a huge snowman and the kids loved sliding down the hills in their sleighs. Its still snowing here.

I was wondering when the snow is going to stop falling in Christchurch so we are able to drive and get to work? Can you please tell me when this is going to happen.

Hi Scott – this is likely to happen overnight Tuesday and into Weds. Tomorrow looks snowier than today according to the data.

We were hoping to travel by road to Wellington from Auckland on Wednesday and wonder if the Desert Road is likely to be open then? If not, how much later?

Not a great chance there Danny – all the energy is moving north into Canterbury northwards now.
