Low pressure looks to be driving New Zealand’s weather more as we enter the final 7 days of 2025.
For Christmas Day and Boxing Day the nation lies between high pressure north of NZ and low pressure near the lower South Island. This will mean more windy west to north-west winds for a number of places off and on over the next couple of days.
Low pressure looks to move in more-so on Sunday and into next week – but doesn’t mean wind or rain for everyone, there will still be long dry spells and mild to hot weather in the mix. But colder air flows do flirt with the lower South Island and the West Coast has heavy rain at times.
Large lows don’t always bring wet and windy weather – sometimes our mountains and ranges can make for very sunny, calm, weather but it’s worth noting that sudden downpours or showers can also form due to the instability.
New Year’s Eve is still not locked in – but we’ll have more details this coming weekend about that.
Programming Note:
This is Phil’s final onscreen video update for 2025 – he will be back again either this Saturday or Sunday with an offscreen update as we continue to track the weather going into New Year’s Eve and the start of 2026.
