Weekend’s Headlines: Where is the rain? Where is the wind? Weather on Sunday

> From the WeatherWatch archives

Here’s what is making the weather headlines this weekend….

WHERE IS RAIN FALLING?

Ok well lets look at the rainfall accumulation map (first map) for this weekend below. You can see the heaviest rain will be for Hawkes Bay / Gisborne / East Cape and western Bay Of Plenty / Coromandel, then for the South Island it’s around Tasman / southern Marlborough / Kaikoura areas.

Yes there will be rainfall or showers for other regions but the places mentioned above is where the bulk of any rain over the next couple of days will be. Central Otago is generally looking the driest.

Now lets add on Mon / Tue and Wed (second map). We can see there is an increase in rain for the areas mentioned above, the West Coast of the South Island and top of the South Island to a degree is where there is a more dramatic change with heavy rainfall moving in there, this is thanks to a front moving in from the west on Monday next week.

For any rainfall warnings over the coming days from Metservice please see this page here.

WHERE’S THE STRONGEST WINDS?

Ask and you shall receive, the northeastern corner of the North Island sees the strongest winds and naturally they are coming in from the east.

Other regions may experience breezy or blustery east to northeasterly winds, especially down the coastal fringe for the eastern South Island, these winds will start to ease from Sunday.

Areas shaded in blue have little to no wind 🙂

WEATHER ON SUNDAY

An easterly quarter airflow still lies over the country however it is starting to ease for the South Island, a front moves onto the West Coast overnight bringing heavy rain.

North Island

Showers for the east coast and for East Cape up through to Northland, there will be morning rain for Auckland and Northland then easing. Taranaki has morning rain (possibly heavy) then afternoon sunny spells, elsewhere in the west for Wellington up through to Wanganui expect morning cloud then sunny spells. Winds from the east, blustery at times, strong for East Cape through to Coromandel but easing later in the day, easterlies in the west will be light to moderate.

South Island

Rain for Tasman and Nelson is heavy then easing to showers in the afternoon. Cloudy for the West Coast with showers pushing down from the north, overnight rain moves in with heavy falls, perhaps even some thunder. Southland and Central Otago is mostly sunny with some high cloud however there could be morning fog. The east coast has quite a bit of cloud, there could be a spit or shower about otherwise mainly dry, some sun may even make an appearance from afternoon. Marlborough has morning spits or showers then sunny spells. Winds are from the northeast mostly, fresh in the morning for Canterbury then easing.
