WEATHER ON SUNDAY

A stationary front runs down the eastern side of the country bringing wet weather, heavy rain for the eastern North Island. A little more settled in the west but showers are expected, a cold front later in the evening for the upper North Island brings a burst of heavier showers.

North Island

Occasional showers in the west and for the upper North Island with southwesterly winds, Bay Of Plenty is mainly dry. Later in the evening showers become more frequent and perhaps heavy north of the Waikato as a cold front moves in off the Tasman. Rain for the East Coast with heavy falls, heavy rain may spill over into the Manawatu at times, east to northeasterly winds.

South Island

Mostly cloudy with rain streaming down the eastern coastal fringe, rain may move further inland at times, equally so dry spells could develop. Rain is most persistent about coastal Otago, Banks Peninsula and the Kaikoura coast. Down the middle of the South Island could see mainly dry weather but there is the risk of a shower or two still, from afternoon sunny spells may break through and conditions dry out further. The West Coast has showers, perhaps even a few pockets of rain during the morning, conditions ease back in the afternoon and a few sunny spells may break through. Winds are mostly light from the northerly quarter, northeasterlies may become gusty later in the day for Banks Peninsula.
