Here’s what is making the weather headlines this weekend….
HEAVY RAIN POTENTIAL
An easterly airflow brings rain into north eastern areas.
Parts of the eastern North Island also have a risk of heavy rain on Sunday.
Finally Marlborough / Kaikoura has a risk of heavy rain on Sunday.
For more details on heavy rain potential see this watch / warning page from Metservice.
GREAT WEATHER IN THE FAR SOUTH
Due to the easterly quarter airflow over the country, most of New Zealand is covered in cloud. We also have wet weather for eastern regions north of Banks Peninsula and isolated showers for the upper North Island, perhaps even unstable showers.
But the far south of the South Island and parts of the West Coast have great weather this weekend, see the cloud cover maps below.
In terms of temperature, the far north is the place to be, sitting in the mid to late teens.
WEATHER ON SUNDAY
A broad weak low continues to sit over the upper North Island today, the airflow south of the lower comes in from the easterly quarter meanwhile expect light winds in the far north. There may be some instability for parts of the upper North Island.
North Island
Mostly cloudy with east to northeasterly winds south of Auckland, showers along the east coast with heavy rain south of Napier easing in the afternoon. Showers and dry spells for the western and upper North Island, there should be a fair amount of dry weather in the southwest (Taranaki through to Kapiti). Bay Of Plenty could see heavy showers at times, perhaps even unstable with thunder, the same goes for Auckland and parts of Northland in the afternoon.
South Island
Mostly cloudy for the upper South Island, a few spits or showers for Tasman / Nelson clear in the afternoon. Rain for Marlborough and the Kaikoura could be heavy, easing by evening. Canterbury may see some sun in the south of the region, cloudier further north, drizzle patches north of Banks Peninsula then in the afternoon rain pushes down from the north reaching South Canterbury in the evening (South Canterbury may only see a few spits or showers later in the day). The West Coast south of Greymouth is mostly sunny although Fiordland may have some cloud and the risk of a shower for a time. Mostly sunny weather for Southland and Otago, coastal Otago does see cloud though especially later in the day.
