Weekend Newsfeed: A weak cold front + a two northern lows (+4 Maps)

Low pressure will form around the North Island later this weekend but Friday is a fairly quiet day for many parts of New Zealand, although a windier north-westerly will start to develop in the south and east of both main islands.

Let’s get into the forecast for Friday to start with…

RAIN:
Rain starts to increase around Fiordland and then later south Westland with a few showers possible in Southland. At the other end of the country a low pressure zone north of the North island will drive in a few showers across the upper half of the island.

WIND:
Those west to Northwest winds will pick up around parts of the South Island, Cook Strait, Wellington and southern Wairarapa.

TEMPERATURES:
Temperatures should lift up a little in many parts of New Zealand today although some in the eastern North Island may not notice much difference.

DAYS AHEAD
On Saturday that low drifts a little further out to sea off the east of East Cape but is worth monitoring as it may brush the north-eastern North Island. Meanwhile at the opposite end of the country in the south-western corner of the South Island then next cold front arrives.

On Sunday showers and that colder change moves into and up the South Island – including Canterbury. It will be colder than average in the lower South Island on Sunday. The low east of the North Island should move away but as that cold front move

And by Monday that low looks to spread further over the North Island and upper South Island, with drier skies over the lower South Island – and likely some frosts around the South Island on Monday morning when you wake up.
