Here’s what is making the weather headlines this weekend…
COLD FRONT SUNDAY / MONDAY
A quick moving cold front pushes over the South Island on Sunday reaching the North Island overnight / into Monday. The change brings in strong southwesterlies, gales for coastal areas and a fair drop in temperatures.
Rain will move through with the change but it doesn’t last too long, easing to showers and sunny spells once the front moves through.
The snow level will sit about 600m for the far south, above 800 to 900m further north.
WEATHER ON SUNDAY
A ridge of high pressure brings settled weather today however a strong quick moving change from the southwest hits the lower South Island late afternoon reaching the lower North Island overnight.
North Island
Partly cloudy skies in the west, there may be a shower or two, mainly later in the day north of Taranaki as cloud thickens. The east coast has cloud and a few showers but these clear from the south during the day and sun breaks through as southerlies die away to be replaced by northeasterlies.
South Island
Cloud thickens for the West Coast bringing in the odd shower, rain develops for Fiordland in the afternoon then pushes northwards in the evening with a gusty southwest change, clearing in behind overnight but showers remain for Fiordland. Nelson and Marlborough have a mainly sunny day, some morning cloud for Nelson breaks away, showers overnight especially for Marlborough as the cold change moves through. The east coast has a mainly sunny day with light winds and temperatures reaching into the early twenties, late afternoon strong cold southwesterlies develop about the far south bringing rain, reaching Canterbury later in the evening, expect coastal gales. Showers clear overnight for North Otago and South Canterbury, remaining about the far south. Snow overnight about the far south to 600m, above 800m further north.
