Here’s what is making the weather headlines today….
WARM IN THE EAST
A northwesterly airflow over the country comes in from Australia today, therefore eastern regions are looking to be quite warm getting into the mid twenties. There is a chance the eastern North Island may even reach into the late twenties, generally inland away from the coast.
Thursday continues to be warm but it will be the North Island that shines in that regard.
Rain is on the way though to cool everyone down Friday and Saturday, perhaps too much rain in the west.
MORE WARNINGS ISSUED
A front moving onto the lower South Island on Thursday brings heavy rain, heavy rain moves northwards along the West Coast on Friday.
In the east expect strong northwesterlies ahead of the front on Thursday.
Watches and warnings issued by Metservice can be seen here.
SNOW IN THE SOUTH?
In behind the front mentioned above there will be some cold air, snow for the lower South Island and about the Main Divide is likely, mainly Friday and Saturday.
Heavy snow for inland Southland / Otago above 700m is fairly probable with lesser amounts to 500m. The exact make up of how this event will play out is yet to be determined, keep an eye on our warnings page here for more details as we move forward.

The only places that MS have ‘snow’ mentioned is Dunedin through to Canterbury.
