A low pressure system brings showers to much of New Zealand today, showers for the western North Island may be heavy with thunderstorms and hail.
Northland, Auckland, Waikato & Bay Of Plenty
Partly cloudy, showers in the west spreading elsewhere in the afternoon, possibly becoming heavy in spots with hail and thunder. West to northwesterly winds.
Highs: 14 – 15
Western North Island (including Central North Island)
Coastal showers, becoming widespread in the afternoon, possibly heavy with thunderstorms and hail. Snow to 800m about the Central Plateau. North to northwesterly winds.
Highs: 8 – 13
Eastern North Island
Mostly sunny, afternoon or evening showers especially south of Napier. Northwesterly winds, evening southerlies for Wairarapa.
Highs: 13 – 17
Wellington
The odd spit then showers becoming widespread around midday and possibly heavy with small hail. Northwesterlies change southerly late afternoon. Showers ease overnight.
Highs: 11 – 12
Marlborough & Nelson
Showers develop for Nelson in the morning then Marlborough around midday. Showers may be heavy at times with a risk of hail, especially about Tasman and the Sounds. Showers clear in the evening. Southerlies pick up from afternoon.
Highs: 10 – 12
Canterbury
Mostly cloudy with showers developing towards midday with southwesterlies freshening, showers clear overnight. One or two showers may be heavy with small hail. Snow lowers to 700 or perhaps 600m. Parts of South Canterbury may stay fairly dry, the Mackenzie Country has morning showers and snow flurries to 700 / 600m clear.
Highs: 10 – 11
West Coast
Fiordland is dry and sunny, showers north through to Greymouth clear in the morning then clearing Buller late afternoon. Showers north of Greymouth could be heavy in the morning. Easterlies change to the south or southeast as showers clear.
Highs: 9 – 11
Southland & Otago
Partly cloudy, showers late afternoon for Southland then evening for Otago as light westerlies change to the south. Snow flurries to 700m.
