Wednesday’s national forecast – Unsettled and windy / wet

Ex Tropical Cyclone Hale moves over the North Island today, pushing out to the east this evening bringing some wet and windy weather. The South Island has a south to southwesterly airflow build.

North Island

Showers for the upper North Island, rain this morning for Auckland eases. Some rain for Bay Of Plenty eases this afternoon. Sunny spells break through this afternoon for Northland. Southwesterly winds strengthen during the day becoming strongest over the Auckland region with a chance of coastal gales then easing overnight. Rain for the lower North Island with heavy falls, especially south of Napier in the east and about Taranaki, easing this evening. Southeasterly winds are strong to gale force, tending to the south this afternoon then easing from this evening. North of Napier in the east early rain clears then some sun may break through, rain or showers pushing back in this evening as southerly quarter winds push northwards, there could be a thunderstorms on this change.

South Island

Mostly cloudy in the south, east and north, the West Coast has some sun. Showers in the south spread northwards up the east coast this afternoon as southerlies freshen, showers clear Southland this afternoon with sun breaking through. Marlborough has rain, easing to showers this afternoon. Nelson has the odd spit or shower today. While the West Coast is mainly dry a shower could sneak through later this afternoon or evening.
