A ridge of high pressure moves in behind a weak cold front moving northwards over the upper South Island this morning then onto the lower North Island before midday.
Northland, Auckland, Waikato & Bay Of Plenty
Waikato and Bay Of Plenty is sunny after any morning cloud clears. Auckland northwards has showers moving in off the Tasman (mainly in the west) with fresh southwesterlies, showers gradually clear away to the north from afternoon as the airflow tends to the south.
Highs: 16-20
Western North Island (including Central North Island)
Partly cloudy, cloud thickens towards midday with the odd shower moving in as south to southeasterly winds freshen, any remaining showers clear in the evening.
Highs: 11-17
Eastern North Island
Showers north of Napier, further south is dry to start with some sun then cloud thickens and a few showers push northwards during the morning as southerlies freshen. Showers clear Wairarapa in the evening.
Highs: 14-17
Wellington
Southerlies freshen in the morning with thickening cloud, a few showers in the afternoon. Southerlies die out at night.

Marlborough & Nelson
Sunny at first, cloud increases late morning as southeasterlies freshen, a few brief showers around midday for Marlborough. Afternoon northerlies for Nelson. Southeasterlies die out at night for Marlborough.
Highs: 15-16
Canterbury
Cloud thickens in the morning with a few showers as southerlies freshen, showers clear in the afternoon with winds tending to the north, cloud gradually breaks away.
Highs: 9-12
West Coast
Any early showers clears then mostly sunny with a touch of high cloud, late afternoon or evening showers for Fiordland as a warm front moves in. Southwesterlies ease.
Highs: 12-16
Southland & Otago
Any morning showers clear then sunny spells increase, southwesterlies tend northwest by midday. Late afternoon or evening cloud thickens.
