Wednesday’s national forecast – Heavy rain in the northeast

Ex TC Fili is centred to the northeast of the North Island today, it pumps in very strong southerly winds and very heavy rain north of about Napier. The South Island sees high pressure start to push in.

Northland, Auckland, Waikato & Bay Of Plenty
Morning rain or showers clear then sun starts to break through, rain (possibly heavy) doesn’t clear Bay Of Plenty till overnight and showers may not clear western Northland till evening. Brisk to strong southwesterlies ease later in the day.
Highs: 18-22

Western North Island (including Central North Island)
Cloudy areas, a few showers towards the eastern ranges, pushing over into the Central Plateau especially from the east, clearing evening. Southeasterly winds, strong to gale force about the coast, easing overnight.
Highs: 13-18

Eastern North Island

Showers, rain north of Napier with heavy falls all day. Torrential falls possible for Gisborne and East Cape. Strong to gale southerly winds, winds may rise to severe gale about the coast Hawkes Bay northwards. Rain and winds easing later in the evening / overnight.
Highs: 15-20

Wellington

Mostly cloudy with occasional showers, strong southerlies, gale force through Cook Strait, easing overnight.
Highs: 14-15

Marlborough & Nelson

Any morning showers clear then sunny spells increase, southerly winds, gusty for coastal Marlborough.
Highs: 16-20

Canterbury

Some morning sun then afternoon cloud may bring a shower or two as winds tend to the south, clearing evening and cloud breaks away.
Highs: 14-16

West Coast

Sunny with southeasterly winds, easing and perhaps tending a little more southwest in the afternoon.
Highs: 18-20

Southland & Otago
Any early showers clear then sunny spells increase, becoming mostly sunny in the afternoon although a few clouds could remain for coastal Southland. West to southwesterly winds die out in the evening.
Highs: 13-15
