Wednesday’s national forecast – Cold SW airflow

A cold southwesterly airflow lies over the country today, unsettled for much of the North Island with rain or showers although conditions start to back off from afternoon. The South Island is a little more settled but a cold front hits the far south around midnight.

Northland, Auckland, Waikato & Bay Of Plenty
Showers, possibly heavy in the morning then easing, showers clear evening. A few showers return at night in the west. Bay Of Plenty should have a dry day with sunny spells. Blustery southwesterlies ease later in the day.
Highs: 12 – 14


Western North Island (including Central North Island)
Rain eases to showers in the morning, showers clear evening. Cold south to southwesterly winds die out later in the day. Snow to 700 or perhaps 600m.
Highs: 3 – 13


Eastern North Island
Rain with heavy falls possible, easing to showers in the afternoon from the south, showers clear overnight. Snow to 600m. Strong cold southwesterlies with coastal gales, dying out at night.
Highs: 9 – 13


Wellington

Rain eases to showers in the morning, showers clear later in the evening as strong to gale southerlies die away. Snow to 500m.
Highs: 8 – 9


Marlborough & Nelson

Any early showers clear then sunny with southwesterlies dying out in the afternoon.
Highs: 10 – 13


Canterbury

Morning showers and snow flurries to 400m clear, showers on Banks Peninsula and about the Kaikoura coast don’t clear till afternoon. Sunny areas increase with blustery southwesterlies dying out during the afternoon, inland at first then towards the coast. Overnight a southerly change brings a few showers.
Highs: 9 – 11

West Coast
Any remaining morning showers clear then mostly sunny, rain develops about Fiordland in the afternoon then moving northwards in the evening thanks to a cold front, there could be a thunderstorm. Snow for the ranges of Fiordland to 300m overnight, 700m further north. Southwesterlies, strengthening overnight.
Highs: 9 – 12

Southland & Otago
Morning showers with snow flurries to 300m ease then clear, rain around midnight with a strong southwest change. Overnight snow lowers to 300m, more so for Southland, a little higher further north.
Highs: 9 – 10
