Wednesday’s national forecast – Cold front moves north

A southwesterly airflow lies over the country today, a cold front moves into the far south first thing this morning then gradually moves northwards.

Northland, Auckland, Waikato & Bay Of Plenty
Partly cloudy with occasional showers, Bay Of Plenty is drier and sunnier but may still see a shower pass over from the west in the afternoon (mainly western BOP). Overnight western areas may see heavy showers. Southwesterlies tend westerly later.
Highs: 13 – 15

Western North Island (including Central North Island)
A mix of sun and cloud, a few showers about Taranaki spread elsewhere in the afternoon. Overnight coastal showers may be heavy with thunder and hail for north Taranaki. Westerly winds.
Highs: 7 – 13

Eastern North Island

Early coastal showers clear then mostly sunny, a few clouds again from afternoon. Overnight southerlies freshen for Wairarapa bringing showers.
Highs: 12 – 15

Wellington

Mostly sunny, overnight southerlies bring showers.
Highs: 11 – 12

Marlborough & Nelson

Mostly sunny with light winds, overnight or around dawn on Thursday southerlies bring showers to Tasman and Marlborough.
Highs: 10 – 13

Canterbury

Mostly sunny, some cloud south of Banks Peninsula. Late afternoon or evening showers push northwards as southwesterlies freshen. Rain overnight for inland areas and parts of North Canterbury. Snow may lower to 200m by dawn on Thursday with heavy snow possible for North Canterbury especially inland above 400m.
Highs: 8 – 11

West Coast

Partly cloudy, there may be a few showers later in the day as southwesterlies change southeast. Overnight rain or showers north of Hokitika.
Highs: 10 – 11

Southland & Otago
Showers develop about Southland early morning, Otago late morning with a southwest change. Showers heavy at first with a chance of hail then easing, becoming restricted to coastal Otago overnight. Snow lowering to 200m. Cold southwesterlies.
Highs: 7 – 8
