Wednesday’s national forecast – Air mass changing to the southwest

The airflow will gradually swing to the southwest today over the country, some morning heavy rain for the North Island’s northeast clears away then some other North Island regions may see a thunderstorm this afternoon. Showers / rain and southwesterlies push northwards along the South Island’s east coast.

Northland, Auckland, Waikato & Bay Of Plenty
Showers and sunny spells, chance of a heavy fall / isolated thunderstorm in the afternoon, mostly clearing evening. Morning heavy rain about eastern Bay Of Plenty eases. North to northwesterly winds change southwest at night.
Highs: 25-27


Western North Island (including Central North Island)
Showers, chance of an isolated heavy fall in the morning for Taranaki then elsewhere in the afternoon, sunny spells break through now and then also. Northwesterlies change southerly overnight.
Highs: 22-26


Eastern North Island

High cloud, breaking away in the afternoon and becoming mostly sunny. Some morning rain north of Napier (heavy about Gisborne and East Cape) clears away. Northerlies. Overnight a fresh south to southwesterly change brings a few showers.
Highs: 28-30


Wellington
Early spits clear, sun breaks through in the afternoon with north to northwesterly winds increasing. Around midnight a fresh southerly change brings showers.
Highs: 22-25


Marlborough & Nelson

Morning showers or spits clear, afternoon sun breaks through with northwesterlies. Overnight southerlies freshen with some cloud and the chance of a shower.
Highs: 24-29


Canterbury
Morning cloud then mostly sunny, perhaps a morning shower for northern parts of North Canterbury then clearing. A fresh southwest change late afternoon (strong about the coast) brings showers, some evening rain for a time before easing overnight.
Highs: 21-28


West Coast
Partly cloudy, showers north of Hokitika ease clearing up in the afternoon. Showers for Fiordland clear in the evening. Southwesterlies freshen later in the day.
Highs: 19-25


Southland & Otago
Showers for Southland, moving into Otago around midday with freshening southwesterlies. Sun for Otago before showers move in.
Highs: 15-23
