A front approaches the far south of the South Island today while a westerly airflow lies over the North Island. Mainly dry conditions are expected in the North Island although there may be a few brief morning showers out west. Rain spreads into South Westland, Southland and parts of Otago during the afternoon and evening in the South Island. A few isolated showers may develop about Mid Canterbury through to Southland in the afternoon also, Otago and Southland showers could become heavy and thundery.

Upper North Island

Cloudy areas with some sunshine, sunny areas mainly out east about Bay Of Plenty. There is the chance of the odd shower at times mainly in the morning. Winds breezy from the west. Mostly sunny in Gisborne with a period of southwest breezes then winds tend northeast in the afternoon.
HIGHS: 22-24, mid 20’s in Gisborne

Lower North Island

A few morning showers clear in the west and about Wairarapa then sunny areas develop in the afternoon as cool southwesterlies tend northwest. Sunny areas and some cloud about Hawkes Bay with a period of southwest breezes then winds tend northeast in the afternoon.
HIGHS: 21-22, mid 20’s on the east coast

Upper South Island

Cloudy areas on the West Coast thickening up in the afternoon with westerly breezes, a few showers develop in the evening then turning to rain overnight with a chance of thunderstorms. Mostly sunny in Nelson through to Canterbury with light winds and some high cloud, northeast breezes pick up a little along the Canterbury coastline in the afternoon. There may be a few isolated showers late afternoon and evening about Mid and South Canterbury running along the foothills.
HIGHS: 17-18 on the West Coast. 22-23 for Nelson, Canterbury and Marlborough

Lower South Island

Areas of high cloud with westerly breezes, winds tend northeast right on the Otago coastline. During the afternoon showers develop about Southland mainly inland, through to eastern Otago. A few of these showers may be heavy and thundery then easing at night as a southwest change pushes into the lower South Island. Expect skies to become cloudy on the West Coast south of the Glaciers in the morning, rain develops about Fiordland by midday spreading into South Westland by evening. Rain may be heavy and thundery as it progresses north.
