Strong northwesterlies lie over the South Island today with heavy rain in the west, dry out east with warmer weather. A ridge just manages to cling onto the North Island bringing mostly settled weather although northwesterlies and cloud build for the lower half of the island during the day.

Upper North Island

Areas of cloud with some sun, north to northwest breezes. Warm temperatures.
HIGHS: 26-28, low 30’s in Gisborne

Lower North Island

Northwesterly breezes for most a little brisk in the west becoming gale force about Wellington and Cook Strait from midday. Lighter winds in Hawkes Bay with sunny weather, some high cloud in Wairarapa. In the West and in Wellington expect cloudy areas with some brief sun from time to time. A few morning showers may pass through Kapiti and about the Tararua Ranges.
HIGHS: 22-24 in the West, 28-31 in the east

Upper South Island

Rain on the West Coast with heavy falls developing in the morning south of Greymouth through to the Glaciers, thunderstorms also possible south of Greymouth late afternoon or in the evening. Heavy rain moves into Buller overnight with thunderstorms possible. Winds will be strong from the north or northwest during the day. Increasing cloud in Nelson with northwesterly breezes, the odd shower at times from late afternoon. About Canterbury and Marlborough expect high cloud with strong northerlies developing in the morning, possibly gusting to gale force from afternoon.
HIGHS: 18-19 on the West Coast. 22 for Nelson, 26-28 in Canterbury and Marlborough

Lower South Island

Heavy rain on the West Coast south of the Glaciers with thunderstorms, strong north to northwest winds. Rain eases about Fiordland later in the evening however overnight the odd heavy thundery shower may move through. Breezy northwesterlies in Southland and Otago with cloudy skies, rain moves in during the afternoon as winds change southwest then clears overnight.
HIGHS: 22-23, mid 20’s about eastern Otago
