A northwesterly airflow lies over the country today, a front pushes northwards over the South Island during the day meanwhile a trough comes out of the Tasman Sea over the upper North Island.
Northland, Auckland, Waikato & Bay Of Plenty
Cloudy areas and the odd shower (especially afternoon), clearing later in the evening. Isolated showers may become heavy in the afternoon about Bay Of Plenty and Northland (more so in the east). West to southwesterly winds.
Highs: 23-26
Western North Island (including Central North Island)
Mostly cloudy with the odd shower, northwesterly winds freshen.
Highs: 21-24
Eastern North Island
Sunny areas and high cloud, a few afternoon showers / spots of rain possible for Hawkes Bay and Gisborne. Light northwesterly winds. There may be an afternoon sea breeze about coastal Hawkes Bay / Gisborne.
Highs: 26-30
Wellington
Mostly cloudy, breezy northwesterly winds.
High: 21
Marlborough & Nelson
High cloud with increasing northwesterly winds, chance spot of rain late morning about Nelson. High cloud breaks away from afternoon for Nelson and by evening about Marlborough.
Highs: 26-29
Canterbury
South to southwesterly winds push northwards during the morning bringing areas of cloud, there may be a shower south of Timaru in the morning then again in the evening. North of Banks Peninsula high cloud breaks to sun in the afternoon. Winds tend to the east by evening.
Highs: 26-28
West Coast
Morning rain with heavy falls possible then easing to showers, long dry spells by evening. Northwesterlies change west to southwest around midday.
Highs: 20-23
Southland & Otago
Some morning rain passes through then clearing for a time and sunny spells may break through, early afternoon a few further showers move back into Southland then late afternoon for Otago as southwest winds freshen.
Highs: 19-27
