A cold front slowly pushes northwards over the South Island today, northwesterlies ahead of this front then changing southwest in behind. A ridge of high pressure slowly loses its grip further north.

Northland, Auckland, Waikato & Bay Of Plenty
A mix of sun and cloud with light west to northwesterly winds, a light shower or two possible in the west at times otherwise mainly dry.
Highs: 20-23

Western North Island (including Central North Island)
Cloudy areas, the odd shower at times especially about Kapiti and Taranaki. Northwesterly winds.
Highs: 17-21

Eastern North Island
Sunny with light winds in the morning, afternoon east to northeast breezes for Hawkes Bay and Gisborne. Northwesterlies about Wairarapa from afternoon. Some high cloud later in the day.
Highs: 21-25

Wellington
Mostly sunny, north to northwesterly winds.
High: 19

Marlborough & Nelson
Mostly sunny with some developing high cloud, rain moves into Nelson around midnight and few spots spread further east. North to northwesterly winds pick up from afternoon.
Highs: 20-24

Canterbury
High cloud with northerlies breezy about inland areas, rain moves into South Canterbury in the evening with a southerly change. Rain or showers moves into North Canterbury overnight.
Highs: 20-24

West Coast
Rain with heavy falls and possible thunderstorms south of about Greymouth, becoming heavy at times further north in the evening. Rain clears about South Westland in the evening as northerlies change southwest.
Highs: 16-19

Southland & Otago
High cloud in the morning and mainly dry, a southwest change around midday brings rain, clearing later in the day for Southland and perhaps overnight for Otago.
Highs: 15-20
