A front moves northwards over New Zealand today, preceding it are brisk to strong northwesterly winds with west to southwesterlies following in behind. Parts of central New Zealand may see gales from northwesterlies before the front moves through, especially in the east.

Mostly cloudy with freshening northwesterly winds this afternoon, rain develops overnight.

Bay Of Plenty

Becoming mostly cloudy this morning, northwesterlies freshen this afternoon
then some rain moves in later this evening / overnight.
High: 19

Waikato & Central North Island

Mostly cloudy with northwesterlies freshening this afternoon, the odd spot
of rain from midday then rain moves in later this evening.
Highs: 15-18

Eastern North Island

Thickening high cloud with strengthening northwesterlies. There may be a
few brief spells of rain spreading from the west at times later this evening or
overnight.
Highs: 20-22

Western North Island

Cloudy with freshening northwesterlies, some rain this afternoon then
clearing later in the evening with winds easing. Winds change southwest later on
about Taranaki.
Highs: 16-17

Wellington

Rain in the morning then clearing early afternoon, strong to gale
northwesterly winds ease in the evening. Cloud breaks later in the
afternoon.
High: 16

Nelson

Some morning rain with strong northwesterly winds, clearing around midday
then sunny spells breaking through. Northwesterlies gradually ease during the
afternoon and evening.
High: 18

Marlborough

Thick high cloud with strong to gale northwesterlies, chance of a spot of
rain. Winds ease mid to late afternoon with high cloud gradually clearing
away.
High: 22

Canterbury

Chance of a shower this morning then expect sunny areas with
northwesterlies easing. Winds tend southerly this afternoon with the chance of a
further shower.
High: 18

West Coast

Heavy rain early on eases to showers as northerlies change gusty west to
southwest, showers clear by evening. About Fiordland further rain moves in this
evening in a developing northwesterly airflow, easing overnight with a southwest
change.
High: 14

Coastal Otago

A few morning showers clear then sunny areas develop, gusty west to
southwest winds. Later this evening or overnight further showers move in,
possibly heavy with hail and some snow lowering to 400m.
Highs: 15-16

Central Otago

Some rain clears this morning then sunny spells develop, westerly winds.
Later this evening or overnight further showers move in with a southwest change.
Some snow lowers to 600m for a time.
Highs: 13-14

Southland

Early rain clears with sunny periods breaking through, brisk west to
northwest winds. Showers again this evening with a southwest change, some snow
to 400m by midnight then showers clearing up.
Highs: 14
