A low pressure system moves over the North Island today, this could bring unstable conditions this afternoon with a risk of thunderstorms and heavy downpours for some. Over the South Island the wind flow tends southerly, sunny on the West Coast while eastern regions experience showers at some point during the day.

Auckland & Northland
Sunny spells with northerly winds. In the afternoon expect showers, heavy for a time with possible thunderstorms then easing evening. Watch for a risk of overnight fog about the Auckland area.

Bay Of Plenty

Rain, heavy with possible thunderstorms first thing in the morning then
clearing with a few sunny spells breaking through. Showers again in the
afternoon possibly heavy for a time then clearing evening. Northerlies
ease.
High: 17

Waikato & Central North Island

The odd shower, sunny spells too. Showers may be heavy with thunderstorms
in the afternoon. Light northerlies change southerly later in the evening.
Highs: 14-17

Eastern North Island

Early morning rain eases then clears with sunny spells developing,
northeasterlies ease too. Overnight southwesterlies freshen with further
showers.
Highs: 15-16

Taranaki

Early rain eases then clears, a few sunny spells may break through with
northeasterlies quickly easing. In the afternoon rain picks up again and
southeasterlies freshen by evening.
High: 15

Western North Island

Early rain eases to showers, light northeasterlies. Winds change southerly
in the evening.
High: 15

Wellington

Periods of rain with easterlies changing brisk southerly by midday
High: 12

Nelson

Rain, easing mid morning to the odd shower which clears around midday. A
few PM sunny spells may break through. Southeasterly winds gradually freshen
during the day.
High: 13-14

Marlborough

Rain with southerly winds freshening by midday, rain eases afternoon then
clears overnight.
High: 13

Canterbury

Cloudy with a few light showers, mainly north of about Banks Peninsula and
perhaps along the foothills into Mid / South Canterbury. Overnight patchy
showers become a little more widespread. Light southwesterlies.
High: 11

West Coast

High cloud about South Westland, morning showers about North Westland clear
to dry weather. High cloud breaks later in the day / overnight for most.
Southeasterlies.
Highs: 13-14

Coastal Otago

Sunny areas with light winds tending southwest, the odd shower moves in
overnight.
High: 12

Central Otago
Sunny areas and
a few clouds about, light winds. There may be a brief shower or two later in the
day, mainly in the south and east of the region.

Southland

Cloudy periods with westerlies in the morning, winds tend southwest in the
afternoon with the odd brief shower moving in.
High: 10
