Expect strong northwesterlies over the South Island today, a risk of gales for some in the east especially Canterbury this afternoon / evening. Temperatures will be above average for most today especially in the east of New Zealand and many North Island areas.

Auckland & Northland
Any early morning rain clears then expect mostly sunny weather with west to northwesterly winds.
Highs: 17-18

Bay Of Plenty

Morning rain eases then clears, mostly sunny in the afternoon.
Northwesterly winds.
High: 17

Waikato & Central North Island

Early rain mostly clearing, the odd brief shower could remain during the
day. Expect sunny spells otherwise with northwesterly winds. Later in the
evening cloud thickens.
Highs: 13-16

Eastern North Island

Morning high cloud breaks to a sunny afternoon with warm temperatures,
northwesterly breezes.
Highs: 17-19

Taranaki

Early cloud breaks to a few sunny spells, northwesterly winds freshening
from afternoon. Late evening cloud thickens then overnight showers
develop.
High: 15

Western North Island

Morning cloud breaks to sunny spells by midday, northwesterly winds freshen
a little in the afternoon. Cloud increases again from late evening.
High: 16

Wellington

Strong northwesterly winds, risk of gales at times from afternoon. Cloudy
spells with spots of rain overnight.
Highs: 13-14

Nelson

Cloudy spells with northwesterly winds, freshening from afternoon. The odd
spot of rain from evening.
High: 14

Marlborough

Mostly sunny with some high cloud, northwesterlies gusty from afternoon
then becoming strong overnight. A few spots of rain overnight too.
High: 16

Canterbury

Sunny with high cloud thickening from midday. North to northwesterly winds
becoming strong around midday, gusts to gale force possible at times especially
inland. In the evening a few spells of rain move through especially
inland.
High: 16

West Coast

Periods of rain, heavy from evening with thunderstorms. Northerly winds
strengthen then change westerly overnight.
Highs: 13-14

Coastal Otago

Sunny areas and high cloud, thickening in the afternoon with northerlies
becoming strong.
Highs: 13-14

Central Otago

Plenty of high cloud, north to northwesterly winds strengthen becoming
strong at times from midday. Mid to late afternoon rain spreads into the
Southern Lakes area from the west, remaining mostly dry further east. Winds ease
later in the evening.
Highs: 10-13

Southland

Thick high cloud with gusty northerlies, strong at times from midday. Some
rain moves through late afternoon then eases in the evening with winds tending a
little more northwest.
Highs: 14-15
