> From the WeatherWatch archives

Here’s what is making the weather headlines today….

HEAVY RAIN / POSSIBLE THUNDER WEST COAST

A front pushes northwards over the South Island this morning bringing heavy rain in the west, also a chance of thunderstorms.

Conditions ease behind this front as it moves northwards however later today a secondary front moves in bringing further heavy rain to the West Coast with a chance of thunderstorms south of about Greymouth.

More on today’s thunderstorms risk from Metservice here.

WARM IN THE EAST

Thanks to a northwesterly airflow eastern regions will see warm temperatures this afternoon. Southland up through to Marlborough will see highs in the mid to late twenties, summer hasn’t disappeared just yet!

Many North Island regions reach into the mid twenties also.

FRONT SOUTH ISLAND ON THU / NORTH ISLAND ON FRI

A slightly more vigorous front moves northwards over the South Island on Thursday, reaching the North Island on Friday. Expect rain for western regions with heavy falls.

Eastern regions do see a few spots of rain or showers perhaps as this front moves northwards but precipitation totals will not be as high as out west. The eastern South Island on Friday sees a higher chance of showers, one or two may be heavy with a chance of thunder in the afternoon especially about inland areas then clearing later in the day.
