Wednesday’s Headlines: Northwest airflow, Heavy rain far north on Thursday

> From the WeatherWatch archives

Here’s what is making the weather headlines today….

NORTHWEST AIRFLOW

A northwesterly airflow lies over the country today. We have a few showers in the west and dry warm weather in the east, temperatures will likely climb into the mid to late teens, not bad for mid winter.

A cold front moves onto the far south later this afternoon or evening and this signals a degradation in our weather that is to occur overnight and into Thursday.

Eastern regions rejoice for at least one more day.

HEAVY RAIN FAR NORTH ON THURSDAY

A front sweeps down over Northland from Thursday afternoon bringing heavy rain, this reaches Auckland and Coromandel later in the evening or overnight.

Below is a computer modeled rain graph for Paihia, eastern Northland. Thursday has a rain total of 35.9mm, Friday 2.3mm.

Heavy rain may move into the eastern North Island on Friday then on Saturday down into Marlborough and Canterbury.

East to northeasterly winds strengthen ahead of this front with gales likely for coastal parts of the upper North Island from afternoon, especially for Northland and Auckland.

Southeasterly winds through central parts of New Zealand strengthen from afternoon also with gales likely for coastal areas like Golden Bay and the Marlborough Sounds.
