Here’s what is making the weather headlines today….
COLD FRONTS PUSH NORTHWARDS
Some wet weather today in the west and about the far south as a series of cold fronts push northwards over the country, showers move up the east coast of the South Island this morning then reaching the eastern North Island this afternoon. North of Napier may stay fairly dry bar a few coastal showers overnight.
Temperatures will drop today with snow likely in the far south to about 200m, it may push as low as 100m (only a few flurries at this level if anything). The upper South Island sees the level at around 600m then the Central Plateau later today may see brief flurries to 800m but this shouldn’t cause any issues. Any accumulations of note will be higher than the levels mentioned here.
There are a few road snow warnings out from Metservice, you can see them here.
STRONG WINDS FOR COASTAL AREAS
Along with showers and snow flurries, winds will be strong for coastal parts today. Also higher up for the ranges of the eastern North Island.
More on today’s wind watches issued by Metservice here.
SNOW FOR CENTRAL OTAGO THURSDAY MORNING?
This isn’t a definite, but a possibility. Temperatures overnight tonight for parts of Central Otago drop to between 0 and -1.
Early on Thursday morning a warm front passes over bringing some rain, there is a chance because of the cold air at the surface that there may be some brief snow to a few inland valleys and basins of Central Otago. There is a chance temperatures may still be a fraction too warm keeping any snow higher up, we shall have to wait and see.
While the rain map below is for 9:00am on Thursday morning, these maps often lag a little meaning it shows rain in the three hours previous to 9:00am.
Nothing much to worry about here but just an interesting quirk of the weather that may occur.
