Wednesday Newsfeed: Westerlies with wet western weather

The wintry blast is coming to an end and in true Spring style windier, warmer, westerlies are returning.

Let’s get into the general NZ forecast for Wednesday

RAIN:
Wet weather today is almost entirely along the western side of New Zealand with a few showers possibly coming in around Southland as well. Some showers may still be a little bit heavy but they should be less intense than they were across Monday and Tuesday. Eastern areas are dry or becoming dry.

WIND:
It is still a bit windy around New Zealand today although not as intense as it was yesterday, but around places like Auckland and Northland and Coromandel Peninsula those west to south-west winds may still be a little bit brisk in exposed places, with marine gales still existing but also easing. A W to NW change arrives in the lower South Island.

TEMPERATURES:
That change in the south of the country will help lift up temperatures today. After a cold and possibly frosty start today, those winds mean temperatures should be a few to several degrees higher than they were yesterday for much of the South Island, with the North Island a couple or few degrees warmer than yesterday for most places.

DAYS AHEAD:
Those westerly winds return even stronger on Thursday with gale force conditions possible in exposed parts of both main islands, before easing further going into Friday. This setup does mean more wet weather comes into the western side of New Zealand, while eastern regions are looking fairly dry.

As we go through into Friday and the weekend some parts of the country will even have subtropical breezes and dry weather towards the top of NZ with west to north-west winds in other parts of the country. But there will still be a little bit of wet weather, mainly around the West Coast and western sides of both main islands.
