Wednesday Newsfeed: Cooler air to be replaced by milder, windier, westerlies again

Apologies but we have no video update today — Cooler/colder air is moving up across the North Island today and a slight swing to the wind flow means that it’s turning a bit more south east – so those of you in the eastern North Island will also get some wet weather, but the South Island is more settled today as high pressure starts to expand…well, sort of. The high won’t be getting any closer to the South Island than it does over the next 24 hours… and the northern placement of this anticyclone means westerlies are returning to NZ by Friday.

Let’s get into the forecast for Wednesday

RAIN:
Patchy rain and showers move around the North Island today and wet weather should gradually clear across the day with dry skies coming in by night time or overnight tonight. Meanwhile most of the South Island is dry although some early drizzle or light showers are possible in the north to north east..

WIND:
Wind today is mostly from the southerly quarter over the North Island with SW winds at the top and S to SE winds in the lower North Island. Fairly light winds across much of the South Island will be very welcome, especially across Canterbury after the recent damaging gales. But westerlies do kick back in again later today and into Thursday/Friday (not severe though).

TEMPERATURES:
Because of the southern injection of air today, temperatures are down nationwide – although it may not be below average showing just how much warmer than average it has been lately that even a southerly in early September doesn’t really do too much to our temperatures this week.

DAYS AHEAD:
Over the days ahead we see those showers clearing the North Island tonight so Thursday is looking mostly dry with S to SW winds blowing through there. The South Island is similar with mostly dry weather although a few showers develop in the west as Westerlies start to ramp back up again and by Friday those Westerly winds cover the entire country. By Saturday that is the next risk for severe weather with heavy rain on the West Coast and severe W to NW gales blowing over the South Island and towards the lower North Island. Strongest winds will again be inland.
