WeatherWatch.co.nz receives surge in meteor reports

> From the WeatherWatch archives

In the past few weeks WeatherWatch.co.nz has received a surge of eyewitness reports about “strange orange fireballs” from here in New Zealand and all around the world.  However in the past couple of days those reports have shot up with meteor sightings coming in to us from coast to coast in America, England, Ireland, Myanmar, Australia and Thailand.

WeatherWatch.co.nz spoke to David Britten, Education Officer at Auckland’s Stardome Observatory to see if there was a possible explanation.

Br Mr Britten wasn’t sure either.  He said it sounded like space junk but that it wasn’t acting like space junk – being seen all around the world.

“I don’t know… and you can quote me on that!” he joked.  Mr Britten says WeatherWatch.co.nz readers should keep a close eye on it and see if a pattern forms but at this stage the reports are too vague to know exactly what’s behind the orange fire balls seen all around the globe.
